URBAN AFFORESTATION

“The project challenges the current attitudes on urban afforestation, exploring a paradigm shift in the understanding and operation of trees and advocates that the velocity of a city should align on the life cycle of trees.”

Wai Lo Ciarra, 2020.

SYNOPSIS

Tree planting as a weapon against climate change has already been discussed for decades.Governments and Institutions vigorously promote the number of trees needed to be planted. “The more the better” is the ambition. Yet, this is a misconception caused by greenwashing.

The project challenges the current attitudes on urban afforestation, exploring a paradigm shift in the understanding and operation of trees and advocates that the velocity of a city should align on the life cycle of trees.

By turning trees into operative devices, two additional objectives are proposed to complement the current strategic plan of Milan: to identify and reserve to state-ownershipterritories for quality tree plantations; and formulate policies on proper use of trees for the cultural and territorial fabric of the Milan and its region. Can the city regenerate through resilience and become a carbon store for the future?
